Holly, your words, as always, were such a balm to me. I had a deep resonance reading about the beautiful and brutal landscapes here, and it reminded me how easy it is to take them for granted. When we are surrounded by beauty we forget to marvel at it.
I long for the day of seeing the endless red dirt of the desert — which also happens to be the colour of the landscape in my childhood in far North Queensland. Funny how we’re always drawn back to what we longed to escape.
I really loved reading this Holly - I went the other way, to Australia from England, and I have been unpacking my ideas around what home means to me ever since. I went back for a visit to England in May, which always brings up some complex feelings as my family background is complicated. However, some of my circumstances had changed, and it was quite a comforting experience this time around - and now you've given me the impetus to reflect on that a bit more. Thank you - and have a great Christmas!
Thank you so much for reading Sarah, and for taking the time to leave your wonderful comment, which I loved reading. Going home again - in all ways - can feel so ancient and all consuming can’t it? In our brains and bones. Thank you also for the kindness and connection in your words. I really appreciate it. Wishing you and yours a restful, present, safe and restorative Christmas ❤️
I am incredibly lucky to be sitting in a Starbucks in New York, reading your essay and watching it rain...plus it is cold. Part of me is flinching at the thought of returning home to Perth in a few days - it was 40° yesterday 🤯- but the other part of me longs for the familiar and the easterly and my pets and my sons. Your essay speaks to my heart; thankyou Holly x
Evocative to read this, Lee. Thanks for sharing. It’s a privilege and a bittersweet experience isn’t it, to leave home for another place, and to return. I hope your time in NYC is energising and enjoyable. Thanks as ever for reading and being here.
Thank you for your essay Holly , so touching and for your courage in writing about what happened to you when you were younger. Bless you . So beautiful 🦋⭐️⚡️
